Benefits of Gardening in raised beds

The practice of raised bed Gardening is thousands of years old dating back to ancient Egypt. Similar garden designs were found in Assyria and Persia growing both vegetables and fruits, along with herbs and flowers. The Romans added topiaries and water features to their raised beds combining landscaping elements to the benefits of this type of gardening

The advantages of raised bed gardening are many

  •  In raised beds you have control over the depth of rich topsoil and this provides your plant greater concentration of nutrients and better use of fertilizers and soil amendments.
  • Your plant has better top soil to grow in at the depth of your choosing and the amendments go where the crops grow instead of all over as in a traditional flat ground garden.
  • In the raised bed you are not wasting the fertilizer and amendments on the walk areas or uncultivated areas.
  • This High fertility of the raised beds allow for more intensive gardening, succession planting, intercropping, and extended seasons.
  • Your soil will warm up quicker in the spring, approx. 5-10 degrees higher in warmth, and stays that way throughout the growing season. (Seeds need warm moist soil to germinate)
  •  Because of the warmer soil you do need to water little more but add some good compost mulch,(once your plants have popped up), and that to can be controlled.
  • Most importantly weed control is a snap and no worry about someone or thing walking on your favorite plants or digging holes underneath.
  • Less bending for planting or weeding means less back ache, and tilling is a breeze since you won’t be walking on or rolling wheel barrels on the soil.

With all the sizes and shapes as well as type of material and even colors, you can landscape your yards into beautiful flower gardens and vegetable/herb gardens that your neighbors will envy.
  • Add a Tropical flair and you create an Oasis to sit in for relaxing right out your door.
  • Or maybe you’re more of a Country Cottage type? Herbs, miniature fruit trees, and big leaf vegetables will finish the effect. I think a pot of good herbal tea will be in order at this garden.
  • How about lots of cut Flowers full of Fragrance, Roses perhaps? And maybe a small Vineyard, just think how many times you have thought about making home made wine or jam.
I do recommend a drip line which is easy to install and saves you time in watering and less waste especially if you run your drip lines at night time. (Most local hardware stores carry drip line and timers).

Our Raised Bed Selection is extremely easy to assemble so the old complaint of the work required to make your raised beds is now a very mute subject.

Happy Gardening to you!
